Basic Clinical Skills

Purpose:

The purpose of this seminar is to review basic principles and to practice fundamental skills for clinical interviewing and intervening. Trainees will learn, in a clinical context, how to answer the following questions: What is the clinical problem? What kind of information do I need to solve this problem? How do I get the information? How do I ensure maximum reliability of information? How do I think about it? And how do I apply it?

Goals and Objectives:

  1. To learn basic principles of psychiatric interviewing and communication, including empathic listening, appropriate questioning , redirection and support.
  2. To model those principles by observing four senior attendings perform diagnostic interviews on patients and then doing an interview in front of each of those clinician and your peers.
  3. To practice clinical reasoning, clinical formulations, clinical decision making, and basic clinical interventions.
