Geriatric Psychiatry Course

Course Goals:
This is a weekly course designed as an introduction to Geriatric Psychiatry for PGY-2 resident physicians. Attendance is required of all PGY-2 residents unless excuse is obtained in advance by contacting the course instructor. Attendance by others requires approval by the course instructor in advance.
Course Objectives:
At the course conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the demographics of population change that demonstrate increased need for psychiatric services to the over 5 year old patient group
- Discuss the distribution and severity impact of mental disorders affecting the elderly population
- Discuss theories of aging and the normal changes seen with aging in longitudinal studies and cross-sectionally
- Have current knowledge and understanding of central nervous system changes occurring with aging and the consequent effects of psychotropic medications
- Understand the clinical presentation, course, comorbidity, and treatment of early onset and late onset mental disorders in the geriatric population including mood and anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, dementias, substance misuse, and personality disorders
- Understand the community resources now available for the aging population and their use
- Understand the medical-legal issues involved in the aging population as affected by power of attorney, guardianship, surrogate decision makers, and advanced directives regarding end of life decisions, decision making capacity, and involuntary care decisions
