Goals and Objectives: Emergency Psychiatry

Goals:

  1. To provide PGY II residents an appropriate experience in emergency psychiatry
  2. To expose PGY II residents to crisis intervention.
  3. To help PGY II residents develop a basic knowledge of acute psychopharmacologic intervention.
  4. To learn to interact with the ER doctors and staff to provide optimum care for psychiatric patients in the ER.

Objectives:

  1. To learn about the process of involuntary treatment.
  2. To learn appropriate assessment of suicidal patients.
  3. To learn how to conduct emergency psychiatric evaluations.
  4. To develop knowledge of psychotropic medications in acute psychiatric emergencies.
  5. To learn to differentiate psychiatric emergencies from medical/surgical emergencies with psychiatric symptoms.
  6. To learn about community service/resources for referral purposes.
