


Goals and Objectives: UCCH Pediatric Rotation
- To provide residents with an intensive exposure to hospitalized
patients.
- To provide residents with an opportunity to evaluate patients
with undiagnosed problems under the supervision of an attending
physician.
- To provide residents with an opportunity to develop management
plans for children with diagnosed medical illnesses.
- To increase resident's skills at determining which patients can
be managed in a general pediatric setting and which require acute care
available in an intensive care unit.
- To enhance residents' skills in the appropriate use of medical
tests and consultant services.
- To familiarize residents with a multidisciplinary approach to
patient care by having them participate as a member of a health care
team which includes physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists
and other ancillary services as needed.
- To provide senior residents with the opportunity to run a medical
team and the opportunity to teach interns and medical students.
- Educational Objectives for Residents on the UCCH Pediatric
Rotation:
- To learn appropriate skills for the evaluation and assessment of
patients.
- To learn which patients can be evaluated and cared for as
outpatients and which patients require hospitalization.
- To learn to formulate differential diagnoses and from them to
develop appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- To learn appropriate and cost-effective use of medical testing.
- To learn to develop complete discharge plans for patients and to
help patients and families make a smooth transition from inpatient to
outpatient care.
- Senior residents should learn effective management skills to
allow for the efficient running of the medical team.
- Senior residents should learn the basic skill of teaching in a
clinical setting, as well as the skills required for evaluating and
giving feedback to the members of the team.
- Senior residents, with the inpatient attending have
responsibility to ensure the smooth running of the service team
- Resident Responsibilities During the UCCH Pediatric Rotation:
- Residents are required to know the information about their
patients necessary to provide appropriate medical care.
- Residents are required to appropriately document all patient
care information, including admission notes, daily progress notes,
discharge notes and transfer notes. Interns are required to dictate
discharge summaries on all of the patients under their care.
- Residents are to attend all scheduled meetings except when
detained by medical necessity on the wards. The scheduled meetings
include pre-rounds, rounds, attending rounds, noon conferences, and
radiology rounds.
