Hyde Park is a racially and economically integrated community anchored for decades by the University. Students rub shoulders with faculty and other families in gracious old houses and apartments, and new housing developments, on tree-lined streets. Bookstores and cafes are open until late in the evening for browsing, dining, and dialogue. Shopping at the huge cooperative grocery store is a tradition. Shopping streets feature stores selling everything from cookware and hardware to clothing and records. The urban environment offers academic and clinical challenges to the University and the Hospitals. Scholars and care providers grapple with the problems of modern society and with the individual patients affected by them. Many patients also come from the University community, other areas of the city, and from all over the Midwest and the world. On every psychiatric service, residents work with patients from all walks of life.
…And Chicago
Chicago is the birthplace of modern American architecture and is known for its beauty and diversity. The city's busy downtown loop is fifteen minutes away by car, train or bus. Four world class museums are located in the central Grant Park area along the length of the city. In Chicago, one can find music, theater and art that rivals any city in the nation. For the lover of classical music, Chicago offers the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other fine musical ensembles. Chicago features good, inexpensive and exotic restaurants of every ethnic origin. As sports lovers know, Chicago is home to the Blackhawks, Cubs, White Sox, Bears, and the six-time world champion Chicago Bulls.
