The University of Chicago’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience offers comprehensive training programs for advanced psychology graduate students. These externships provide training in assessment and intervention for patients presenting to a large academic medical center for evaluation and/or treatment. Externs are expected to be enrolled in a doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology that is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). Training occurs in the Adult and Child Sections of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. Externships at UCMC have different requirements for application—please read the specific instructions for each program. All externs receive at least one hour of individual supervision by a licensed clinical psychologist. Further, externs are an integral part of the education mission of our Department and attend numerous required and optional didactic experiences.
Faculty who provide externship training at UCMC do not abide by ACEPT training guidelines. Thus, we will not be following the official Chicago-area “Match Day” policies. However, if you are made an offer for an externship, your supervisor will make every effort to conform with your program’s expectations and policies regarding notification and acceptance of a position.
Applicants who accept any externship should understand that prior to commencing training at UCMC, they will be required to successfully pass a required medical examination which includes TB testing and a drug test. Further, you will be expected to complete required on-line training per UCMC regulations (e.g. HIPAA, Compliance Training, etc.). You will also be expected to provide your supervisor with a copy of your school’s malpractice insurance coverage for its students. If you have supplemental individual malpractice insurance, this documentation is needed as well.
Each externship program is described in more detail below. Applicants should apply directly to the Director(s) of the specific program. If you choose to apply to more than one externship program, you should submit an application to each individual program.
