Adult Behavioral Weight Management

1 Position

Overview: This is an advanced psychotherapy externship designed to provide training in assessment and treatment in behavioral weight management through the Chicago Weight Program, an interdisciplinary medical and behavioral weight loss program staffed by a psychologist, physician, nurse practitioner, nurse, and dietician. Externs will provide evaluation, consultation, and individual short-term evidence-based treatments for patients with overweight and obesity, including cognitive-behavioral and acceptance-based treatments. Externs will participate in a multidisciplinary treatment team and will have the opportunity to shadow program practitioners from other disciplines to learn about all facets of medical obesity treatment. Externs will see up to 8 patients per week with Dr. Busby and up to 4 patients solo; externs will also have the opportunity to co-lead group behavioral weight management treatment sessions. All trainees will receive at least one hour of individual supervision provided by Dr. Busby. Additional individual or group supervision may be provided by an intern and/or another staff member.

Didactics: Didactic training includes the Health Psychology seminar, Endocrinology grand rounds (ENDORAMA), attendance at disease-specific information sessions, and discussion of relevant health psychology reading materials. Externs are able to attend other didactics, such as Psychiatry Grand Rounds, Professional Issues Seminar, and Psychiatry Case Conferences. 

Requirements: Please read the following list carefully to determine whether you are eligible to apply for this externship.

Able to devote 16-20 hours per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays:

-          One full day per week (Tuesdays mandatory) in clinic at 150 East Huron St.

-          One full day per week (Thursdays mandatory) in Hyde Park for supervision and didactics

Current enrollment in an APA-accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology

Completion of Master’s degree at the time of application

At least 2 previous practicum experiences, with one of them involving provision of psychotherapy

Training year runs from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.
