Externship in Psycho-Oncology

Externship in Psycho-Oncology

Supervisor: Yasmin Asvat, Ph.D.

2 Positions

Overview:  This is an advanced health psychology externship designed to provide a combination of training experiences in Health Psychology, broadly, and Psycho-Oncology, specifically.  Externs will provide evaluation, consultation, and short-term evidence-based treatments for patients with comorbid medical and mental health issues. Two distinct opportunities are available and the specific distribution of time will be discussed during the interview process: 1) Inpatient consultation in Psycho-Oncology – externs will work embedded within the Psychiatry Consultation/Liaison team to provide brief, targeted psychotherapy support for oncology patients who are hospitalized and who have been referred by the primary medical team for psychosocial support. Additionally, externs will conduct routine psychosocial evaluations and offer risk-stratified follow-up care for newly diagnosed patients in the Leukemia Service. In this capacity, externs will have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team including oncologists, psychiatrists, residents, fellows, social workers, nurses, and medical students; 2) Outpatient psychotherapy in Health Psychology – externs will provide outpatient psychosocial evaluation and evidence-based treatment to patients with co-morbid medical and mental health issues. Presenting problems may include adjustment reactions to a newly diagnosed cancer or the transition to cancer survivorship, depression, anxiety, trauma reactions, and behavioral symptom management needs (fatigue, insomnia, nausea, pain). Externs will see approximately 6-8 patients per week. They will receive at least one hour of individual supervision provided by Dr. Asvat and are also expected to attend Psychiatry C/L rounds once a week (Tuesday or Wednesday mornings).

Didactics:  Didactic training includes assigned readings and discussion of relevant health psychology and psycho-oncology materials. Externs are able to attend other didactics depending on which day they are on site.  These offerings include Grand Rounds, the Health Psychology Seminar, the CBT Seminar, Psychosocial Oncology Team Meeting, Professional Issues Seminar, and Consultation-Liaison Case Conference.
