Externship in Reproductive Behavioral Health

Externship in Reproductive Behavioral Health

Supervisor: Candice Norcott, Ph.D.

1 Position

Overview:  This is an advanced psychotherapy externship designed to provide training in Clinical Health Psychology with a specialization in women’s reproductive health.  Externs will provide evaluation, consultation, and short- and long-term evidence-based treatments for patients with comorbid medical and mental health issues.   This externship works closely with providers from the Family Planning Section of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.  Patients will be drawn from the adult psychiatry clinic, peds/adolescent gynecology clinics, general gynecology, and the Ryan Center.  The Ryan Center provides reliable, confidential, and comprehensive health care for women seeking abortion services, contraceptive services and miscarriage care.  Externs will spend a half-day within the Ryan Center providing integrated behavioral health services.  They will also carry a caseload of outpatients for psychotherapy, and learn to work within the multidisciplinary environment of an academic medical center.  Externs will see approximately 3-5 patients per week and will receive at least one hour of individual supervision provided by Dr. Norcott.  An intern and/or another staff member may provide additional individual or group supervision.

Didactics:  Didactic training includes assigned readings and discussion of relevant reproductive and women’s health psychology materials. Externs are able to attend other didactics depending on which day they are on site.  These offerings include Grand Rounds, the Health Psychology Seminar, the CBT Seminar, Ryan Center Clinic Meeting, MacLean Center Ethics Lecture Series, CBT and Multidisciplinary Case Conferences, and Consultation-Liaison Case Conference.
