Patient care

The resident will be able to:

  • Perform independently a competent patient interview exploring all aspects of a patient's history and including a complete mental state examination
  • Use the information obtained during a patient interview to develop an accurate differential diagnosis and pertinent treatment plan
  • Assess suicide risk for a potentially suicidal patient
  • Assess risk of violence for a potentially violent patient
  • Document patient assessment and biopsychosocial treatment in the medical record, including effect of clinical interventions
  • Recognize and manage the side-effects of psychiatric medicines
  • Perform supportive psychotherapy
  • Provide effective and therapeutic environmental interventions for patients with personality disorders, including setting appropriate limits for patients
  • Use supportive and psychoeducation techniques with families of patients
  • Manage common medical problems in psychiatric patients, including knowing when to obtain consultation
  • Make appropriate use of time-out, restraints, and seclusion, including using methods to minimize the use of more restrictive procedures
  • Make appropriate use of ECT in acute psychiatric illnesses
  • Make effective use of the inpatient milieu

Medical knowledge

The resident will be able to:

  • Recognize and address common psychodynamic processes in psychiatric inpatients, such as projection and splitting
  • Describe the phenomena of and use the diagnostic criteria for various psychiatric disorders, with a sophisticated understanding of these disorders:
    1. Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders
    2. Mood Disorders
    3. Adjustment Disorders
    4. Substance-Related Disorders
    5. Personality Disorders
  • Describe indications for, risks and benefits of ECT; describe the methodology of ECT including premedication, use of anesthetics and other medications; administer ECT in appropriate patients; and understand and manage complications of ECT.


Interpersonal and Communication Skills

The resident will be able to:

  • Present findings and judgments in a coherent, orderly oral and written fashion, including differential diagnosis and biopsychosocial interventions
  • Engage with a family and assess family functioning
  • Work with a multidisciplinary treatment team


The resident will be able to:

  • Supervise and teach medical students and junior residents
  • Interact with nurses, social workers, and therapists in a professional manner
  • Respond to patient and treatment team needs in a timely and properly prioritized fashion

Systems-based practice

The resident will be able to:

  • Identify patients’ vocational needs and access such resources with help from members of the treatment team
  • Use the voluntary admission process and develop a voluntary admission agreement
  • Understand the certification process, including the documentation of need for involuntary treatment in a petition and certificate
