Internal Medicine-Psychiatry Residency Program

UChicago's Combined Internal Medicine–Psychiatry (Med-Psych) Residency trains physicians in both fields over five years. Inaugural PGY-1 cohort starts 2027

The University of Chicago Medicine is launching a Combined Internal Medicine–Psychiatry (Med-Psych) Residency Program, with an inaugural cohort of two PGY-1 residents beginning in June 2027 (pending ACGME accreditation, anticipated February 2027).

Med-Psych physicians occupy a distinct clinical space: they are trained to care for patients whose needs cross traditional boundaries between medicine and psychiatry — patients with high health complexity, significant comorbidity, and conditions that neither field manages well alone. These are among the most underserved patients in the health system, and training physicians to care for them well is both a clinical imperative and an equity issue.

At UChicago, that imperative has shaped our departments for years. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience and the Department of Medicine each bring deep, independently recognized strengths — and a long history of faculty working across that boundary in clinical programs, research, and consultation-liaison care. The Med-Psych Residency formalizes and advances that work, as part of a broader institutional commitment to building integrated care across UChicago Medicine.

Residents in this program train fully within two long-established, ACGME-accredited programs. The Internal Medicine Residency is known for its emphasis on resident autonomy, medically complex patients, and subspecialty depth — including dedicated Cardiology and Hematology/Oncology inpatient services, a 24-bed MICU, and a Level 1 Trauma Center. The Psychiatry Residency offers deep training in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and research, with longitudinal individual faculty mentorship. Med-Psych residents gain the full clinical experience of both programs, augmented by dual-trained faculty and growing opportunities to practice integrated care.

The program is designed for physicians who are drawn to complexity — clinically, intellectually, and professionally. If you are someone who finds artificial boundaries between medicine and psychiatry challenging, who is energized by patients who don’t fall neatly into one category, and who wants to lead, build, or investigate at the intersection of these fields, this program was built with you in mind. As a member of our inaugural cohort, you will train with close faculty mentorship, help shape a program in its formative years, and join an institution with the vision and resources to make integrated care a defining feature of how we practice medicine.

We are recruiting two PGY-1 residents for the 2027–2028 academic year. ACGME accreditation is pending, with a decision anticipated in February 2027.

Please reach out if you have any questions regarding our upcoming Med-Psych program.
